Last weekend was absolutely insane for the Lion personally and also in college football. You know by now that the Lion boozed himself to near death on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. You know by now we had more upsets of top ten teams then we have had in like 100 years. Thanks to a bullshit backdoor cover by Nebraska, it’s the Lion’s first below .500 week of the year. I went 4-5 to bring my season record to 31-23. The Lion is still recovering from the weekend and the bad picks column, so he is going to go light on the analysis but still give you the extra picks like I have in the previous feature columns since there are so many awesome games this week. Deal? Good. The Lion is going to lay on his couch and watch football in peace. Shhh.
Favorite Favorite of the week: Texas vs. Oklahoma -14.5 in Dallas: This legendary rivalry isn’t getting a ton of attention this year because the Longhorns are rebuilding with a new coach. Normally I would take the points here in this game, but I can’t help but remember what Texas did last year to Oklahoma. They blew the Sooners out in embarrassing fashion. The Sooners are probably still mad about that. Oklahoma lost a game last week to TCU. They are probably madder about that. I have a stat for you. Oklahoma hasn’t lost back to back games this century.PICK OK-14.5.
Bonus Favorite: Bama -9.5 at Arkansas: I love the way Ark plays, but Bama will be pissed after losing last week, and the Tide won’t have to worry about a hurry-up spread attack this week, as the Hogs’ physical brand of offense is plays right into the strength of a Tide defense that enters with the No. 3 rush defense in the country. PICK BAMA -9.5
Favorite Dog of the week: UNC +16.5 at ND: The Lion has given you his thesis for betting ND. It has been accurate every week this year. Huge (lucky) win vs. Stanford last week means ND is overrated this week at home against a North Carolina team this week before going to Florida State next week. This game just has “IT’S A TRAP” all over it. Admiral Akbar is obviously a Navy fan so he most likely hates the Irish. He will not warn them. PICK UNC +16.5.
Bonus Dogs: See Below
GAMES OF WEEK: We have another huge batch of games between top 25 teams. Most are in the SEC. Shocker.
#13 Georgia -3.5 at #23 Mizzou: For once I am writing this after I get news of a starter being suspended. (Editor’s Note: Former) Heisman trophy candidate Todd Gurley is suspended for some reason. UGA doesn’t play defense. Without Gurley to help them establish a drive to keep their awful D off the field, Mizzou is at home and a dog playing a team without the best RB in college right now. Have to take those points. PICK MIZZ +3.5
#12 Oregon -3.5 at #18 UCLA: This game would have been a lot bigger deal last week when these teams were in the top ten. Both of these teams are coming off losses that are a directly on the shoulders inept OL play. UCLA is getting points at home. They actually have a better defense than the Ducks and are the heathier team. I think they bounce back from the upset better. PICK UCLA +3.5
#3 OLE MISS at #14 TEXAS A&M -2.5: Everybody expects Ole Miss to have a letdown after beating Bama and A&M to bounce back. I am terrified of this, especially because their streaky QB Bo Wallace had basically a perfect game. Still, I am going to roll with them here. The Ole Miss defense is big-time. They have allowed just three TDs in 64 opponent drives, forcing 12 turnovers with 25 drives ending without a first down. Ole Miss is allowing just 278 YPG (No. 5 nationally) and 10 PPG (No. 2). They shut down a legit Bama offense last week. On the other side we have an Aggies D that gave up 484 yards versus Arkansas, then, backed it up allowing 559 yards and 48 points versus Mississippi State. Let’s talk about Kenny Hill for a minute. After lighting up what we now know is an awful SC defense week 1, and beating up on cupcakes, he now completed less than 60 percent of his passes in each of the past two weeks, and threw three interceptions in Week 6. Meh. I am going to take the points. One of the most underrated players to watch in the country is Ole Miss S Jeremy Pruitt. Guy lays wood. Pick OLE MISS +2.5
# 9 TCU Horned Frogs at # 5 Baylor Bears -10.5: When did this become the battle of Texas? The Lion told you that TCU was one of his most underrated teams in college FB. I knew their D was going to be legit. Skillz convinced me to take a closer look at their QB Trevone Boykin. He really thrives in the Horned Frogs up tempo spread offense. I took TCU last week against Bama. I think they can win out right against Baylor because Gary Patterson is the master of stopping gimmicky spread offenses. Want proof? Last year, when they were a mess offensively, TCU outgained the Bears and held them to 370 yards (Baylor’s season low by 76 yards and lowest total in past four years). It was just the second time in the past four years Baylor was held under 5.0 yards per play (4.7) — the other was last year against TCU (4.1). While I am worried for a letdown after the big Oklahoma upset, I think TCU could win this game outright and so I have to take those points. The season of the DOG continues. PICK TCU +10.5 BONUS DOG OF WEEK.
GAME OF WEEK: #2 Auburn at #3 Miss St. +2.5: WAR EAGLE has been my pick to win the title all year long. I love the way they play. They are battle tested on the road having survived the trip to Kansas State on Thursday Night. Here that experience pays off. Two other reasons I like Auburn. 1)They’re playing much tougher defense this year, 2)The emergence of wideouts Duke Williams and Sammie Coates. We know Dax Prescott is the new Heisman Front runner, but if the Bulldogs have a weakness, it’s a tendency to let too many opposing receivers run free in the secondary for big gains. That is the difference here in a close and very entertaining game. WATCH THIS GAME. PICK AUBURN -2.5
